“The League of Women Voters strongly denounces President Trump’s false, outlandish, and indefensible claims related to the security of US elections. Continuing to spread allegations that have been repeatedly debunked by experts through countless court proceedings not only erodes public confidence in the democratic process but also further weakens the institutions that protect our freedom to vote. This is yet another brazen attempt to undermine elections and suppress voter turnout.

Our elections and national security have been protected because of agencies such as the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the US Election Assistance Commission (EAC), both of which had their leadership dismantled by the Trump administration. You cannot claim to defend election integrity while blatantly dismantling it and firing the independent experts whose very job it is to protect it."

This weekend, the nation watched in horror as another civilian was beaten and killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in broad daylight, surrounded by bystanders. Our communities — in Minnesota and beyond — are reeling from the irreparable harm and trauma that federal immigration enforcement efforts have caused. The Administration continues to scale up its overreach, intimidation, and suppression. Congress has the authority and responsibility to take vital action immediately.

This week, the Senate will be voting on House-passed spending legislation ahead of the January 30th deadline to keep the government fully funded. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) appropriations bill includes additional funding for ICE and Border Patrol but does not impose sufficient DHS oversight and accountability measures. Further, the expansion of federal immigration enforcement efforts has proliferated and revealed the abuses that ICE is inflicting on civilians.

“The President’s suggestion that lawmakers should face death for upholding the rule of law is not political rhetoric — it’s an authoritarian threat that shatters every democratic norm. No leader in a functioning democracy invokes death as punishment for dissent. Doing so endangers our institutions, our public servants, and the foundations of democratic governance."

"At a moment when Americans need real solutions to the growing crises impacting their lives, the President is choosing violent intimidation over governing."

"While he escalates chaos, the League of Women Voters is doing the work he refuses to do: strengthening democracy.
"He chooses division. We choose the American people—our safety, our freedom, and our future. We will keep choosing unity, dignity, and shared promise of a democracy that protects us all. And we will stand up, speak out, and keep fighting to protect it.”

Big data IS Big Brother, and these data banks are a terrifying move in the wrong direction. These consolidated profiles are being used to identify, target, and punish people based on their race and ethnicity. These data banks are also being used to target and disenfranchise legally registered voters, especially in communities that have been historically disenfranchised. And, as the federal government has admitted, these data records are fraught with errors!

Help Us Tell the Federal Government: Hands Off Our Personal Data ! If we don’t act now, Big Brother will continue to have unauthorized access to all of your:
• Voting Records
• Tax filings and income sources
• Social security earning records
• Medicare and Medicaid health information
• Business filings
• Charitable donations
• Religious affiliations
• Civic and social memberships
• Military status
• Marital, divorce, estate and paternity records
Portland has long been a city where people gather to speak out, advocate for justice, and demand accountability from their government. To answer civic participation with militarization is a dangerous misuse of federal power. What Portlanders need is investment in community safety, affordable housing and public health - not troops in their streets.
The League call on the Oregon congressional delegation to condemn the weaponization of the federal military and stand up for the people of Portland. We commend Oregon government officials for taking legal action against this unjust occupation.
The League of Women Voters stands firmly with Portland - a city whose voices have long shaped our nation's pursuit of justice and equality.
We strongly condemn this deployment, and any use of federal troops in American cities without due cause.
On July 4th, President Trump signed into law a package, officially titled the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” that will drastically cut health care for millions of Americans. In response, the League of Women Voters of the United States issued the following statement:
“On the day we should be celebrating America, instead, President Trump and his allies are attempting to systematically dismantle the very reason for this holiday and put our country in harm's way by ripping away health care from millions of Americans.
“The bill will kick millions of people off Medicaid — the single largest source of health coverage in our country — a completely unnecessary and disastrous choice that does nothing to improve Americans’ lives.
Congress faced a choice: health care for millions of Americans, or tax cuts for the rich. It chose the latter. Now, all Americans — particularly seniors, Americans with disabilities, low-wage workers, pregnant people, veterans, and children — will suffer.
We welcome ideas for how to re-energize in the fall,

Vote 411

VOTE411 (vote411.org) is a web-based project of LWV that offers election information needed by citizens such as voter registration and local voting information. Our local league plans to cover important races in our counties, cities, towns as well as school boards and ballot measures. There is great support locally as well as help on the State level but we could use more representatives from the Flagstaff area. All members are welcome. Contact Marianne at marsh.86326@gmail.com for more information or to join the group. Thank you for considering!

Volunteers Needed

Hard to believe it will be election time again… but yes, it’s coming and we need lots of help. We’re starting up Voter Registration events this spring, preparing outreach programs, visiting high schools and distributing information cards. If you care passionately about empowering voters – this is the place for you. No experience needed - we will provide training and you’ll work with other like-minded members. We’re assembling teams now. Contact Diane Troianello at sedonagirldt@gmail.com if you would like to be part of this important and rewarding effort.
