Message from the President

Hello fellow Leaguers,

Ahh… it’s begun to cool down and we can enjoy the beauty of our area in a bit more comfort as we head toward Election Day in November. While this is a quiet year, both Yavapai and Coconino counties have ballot by mail elections.  What is on your ballot will depend on your address.  You can find more specific information at azcleanelections.gov

While Election Day 2024 is still far off, it’s not too soon to begin thinking about some aspects.  The polls will need workers.  County officials have been running informational sessions.  The session for Yavapai will have passed by the time you receive this, but the Coconino session will occur on Oct 21.  See below for details.

Many ballot initiatives will be circulating for signature.  I expect it will be an exceptionally busy ballot next year.  As a reminder, you can only sign the petition marked for the county where you are a registered voter.

LWV Arizona will be a partner in supporting and collecting signatures for the Arizona Abortion Access petition.  LWVUS believes that public policy in a pluralistic society must affirm the constitutional right of privacy of the individual to make reproductive choices.

Finally, we’re coming together as members to socialize and learn a bit more about the League.  Please see the invite and signup below if you would like to join us on November 2.

Yours in league,

Maryann Kenney

President LWVNAZ

Elections are powered by people.  Elections and Democracy function best when people are willing to step forward and help in a fair and transparent system.

Do you want to know more about working the polls?  Could this be a role for you?

While the Yavapai session has already occurred, if you live in Coconino county you may wish to join  the upcoming conversation on Oct 21 with the Coconino election administration about the importance of election workers. (As these cover specific county needs and procedures, please join the program for your own county.)

Political Book Club and
Let's Talk Politics

The Political Book Club meets at 3:00 pm MST followed by Let’s Talk Politics from 4:15-5:00 pm MST.

Book selections for the remainder of the year are the following:
October 30, 2023 and November 27, 2023 - Midnight in Washington: How We Almost Lost Our Democracy and Still Could, by Adam Schiff. A stunning look at what the Trump years have done to us as human beings. Congressman Schiff’s argument about where we go from here is that it is only human agency—the willingness of individual people to be brave and speak truth to power, and bear the consequences of it—that is the only thing that will get us out of what remains an existential danger to us as a democracy.

We will read parts 1 and 2, up to page 201 for October and the remainder of the book for November.

There is no meeting in December.

The only requirement to join the discussion is that each participant has read the book. The standard format consists of each person giving a brief (1-2 minute) statement concerning the book’s overall impressions and implications. This segment is followed by group questions and discussions of the material.   If you would like to join the book club, or want to submit the title of books you are interested in reading and discussing, or if you would like any other information about the book club, please contact ann.holland99@gmail.com.

To join the Zoom meeting, click here and use passcode 220148. You will need to be admitted by the host.
